Learner Licence Test: Practise Online and Pass the First Time

This page covers the practical side of getting a learner's licence through the official Sarathi portal: what to keep ready, the steps in the order the portal follows, and how to prepare for the test itself.

Documents to keep ready

Gather these before you start the online form. Having them scanned and saved on your phone or computer makes the upload step quick.

• Proof of age, such as your Aadhaar card, passport, birth certificate or Class 10 certificate.
• Proof of address, such as Aadhaar, passport, a utility bill or a rent agreement. Aadhaar can often serve as both proofs.
• A recent photograph and your signature, scanned to upload. If you complete Aadhaar eKYC, many states need only the signature.
• Form 1, a self-declaration of physical fitness. Applicants above 40, or those applying for a transport vehicle, also need Form 1A, a medical certificate from a registered doctor.
• Your mobile number, since the portal sends OTPs to it at several stages.

How to apply on Sarathi, step by step

The exact screens vary a little by state, but the stages below follow the order the portal itself lists.

1. Choose your state

   Open the Sarathi portal and select the state where you want the licence. Every later step is handled by that state's transport department.

2. Fill in the application

   Under Learner Licence, choose Application for New Learner Licence. Enter your details, the classes of vehicle you want and the RTO you will use. Note down your application number.

3. Upload documents, photo and signature

   Upload the scans from your list. If you verified with Aadhaar eKYC, the portal asks you to upload only your signature.

4. E-sign and pay the fee

   E-sign the application, pay the fee online, then use Verify Payment Status to confirm it went through. The fee depends on your state and the vehicle classes you choose.

5. Watch the road safety tutorial

   Under Tutorial for LL Test, request an OTP with your application number and watch the full video. The portal asks you to complete it before the online test.

6. Book a slot or take the test online

   In states that offer it, Aadhaar-based applicants can take the test from home. Others book an LL Test Slot and take the test at the RTO.

Once you pass, you can print your learner's licence from the Learner Licence menu. Keep a copy on your phone and carry it whenever you practise driving.

Tips to pass the first time

1. Take the mock test at least five times over several days, not all in one sitting. Spread-out practice sticks better.
2. Learn signs by shape and colour first. Circle means an order, triangle means a warning, blue rectangle means information. That alone narrows most sign questions to one or two options.
3. Read every option before you click. Two answers often differ by a single word, such as may and must.
4. Use the review page. Write down the questions you got wrong and revisit only those the next day.
5. Pick the language you read fastest. You can choose a regional language for the real test too, and the countdown favours whatever feels most natural.
6. For an at-home test, sit in a quiet, well-lit room with a charged device and a steady internet connection, and follow the on-screen instructions exactly.

If you do not pass
