UMANG App Guide: Many Government Services in One App

UMANG, short for Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance, brings services from many central and state government departments into a single app. Instead of installing a separate app for every department, you can search for the service you need, sign in, and get started. This guide explains what UMANG offers, how to set it up, how a department service such as provident fund works inside it, and how to avoid common scams.

What UMANG offers

UMANG is developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the National e-Governance Division. Departments of the central government, state governments and local bodies offer their services through it. The list of services changes over time as departments add or update them, so the app itself is the best place to check what is currently available.

Services are grouped under areas such as:

• Employment and provident fund, for example EPFO services like viewing your PF passbook and tracking a claim
• Pensions and central government schemes
• Health, education, housing and agriculture
• Transport and utilities, including some bill payments
• State-specific services, which vary from state to state

UMANG also connects with other Digital India services such as DigiLocker, so some of your documents can be reached from the same app. The app works in English, Hindi and several other Indian languages.

Before you install

UMANG is free. Install it only from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, and check that the publisher is MeitY, Government of India. Avoid apps with similar names and logos. If you prefer a larger screen, UMANG also has an official website that works with the same account.

How to set up UMANG

1. Install and choose your language

   Open the app after installing and select the language you are most comfortable with.

2. Register with your mobile number

   Enter your mobile number and verify it with the OTP sent by SMS.

3. Set your MPIN

   Create a PIN for quick sign-in and keep it private. If you forget it, you can usually sign in with an OTP instead and set a new one.

4. Fill in basic profile details

   Adding details such as your state helps the app suggest services that are relevant to you. Enter only what is asked.

5. Search for a service

   Use the search bar to find a department or service by name, such as EPFO or your state's name. If the app lets you mark favourites, save the services you use often.

Example: using EPFO services on UMANG

Provident fund services are among the most used on UMANG and show clearly how a department service works inside the app.

1. Search for EPFO and open it.
2. Choose the service you need, such as viewing your passbook or checking the status of a claim.
3. Enter your Universal Account Number (UAN) when asked.
4. Verify with the OTP sent to the mobile number registered with EPFO. This may not be the same number you used to sign up for UMANG.
5. View, download or submit as needed, and note any reference number shown.

For most EPFO services, your UAN needs to be activated and your KYC details, such as Aadhaar and bank account, need to be linked with EPFO. If a service says your details are incomplete, the correction has to be made in EPFO's records. UMANG only shows what the department has.

Why a service might not work

UMANG is a common window, but each service still runs on the department's own systems and follows its rules. That explains most problems:

• The department's server may be slow or under maintenance. Try again after some time.
• The OTP may go to the number registered with that department, not your UMANG number.
• Your records with the department may be incomplete or have a mismatch, such as a name spelled differently.
• Some services are available only in certain states.
• Your app may be out of date. Update it from the official app store.

Payments and fees

The UMANG app itself is free. Some services, such as bill payments or application fees, involve a payment. The amount is set by the department concerned and is shown before you pay. Check the service name, the amount and the receiver carefully, and keep the receipt or reference number until the payment shows up in the department's records.

Tips for using UMANG smoothly

• Keep your mobile number updated with the departments you deal with, since service OTPs go there.
• Note down the reference number of every request you submit, in case you need to follow up.
• For complicated tasks, the department's own official website may offer more options than the app.
• Sign out if you use UMANG on a shared phone or computer.
• Keep your phone's screen lock on, as UMANG can show personal details such as your PF balance.

Where to get help

If something goes wrong, start inside the app. UMANG has its own help and feedback options, and many department services show their own contact details. When you contact anyone, share the service name, the date and the reference number, but never your OTP, MPIN or card details. For problems with your records, such as a wrong name in your PF account, contact the department itself through its official website or office, because UMANG cannot change department records.
